Object Name Sham, Pillow
Date after 1978
Description Pillow cover made by Hmong artisan. Top is cross stitched all-over in a repeating pattern of 1 1/4" x 1 1/2" rectangles with colors repeating diagonally. Color combinations of red/orange cross stitch, red/turquoise, turquoise/yellow, yellow/green, green/purple, purple/white, white/orange, then repeating back to orange/red. All over use of black backing fabric creates the negative space. Individual cross stitches about 1/16" in size.

Provenance Purchased by donor in upper Midwest, United States. Donor was on a committee when members of the Hmong community first came to the Des Moines, Iowa, area as refugees in the late 1970s-early 1980s.
